Welcome to Natur-Blog

At Natur-Tec®, we’re invested in creating a more sustainable future. We created Natur-Blog to provide fun and informative content centered around composting, zero-waste, and sustainability.

Wasted food is just that… a waste! Wasted food goes beyond spoiled food being thrown out and sent to landfills. It takes tremendous amounts of resources and energy to grow and transport food, and more energy to transport and dispose of waste. In order to transition towards a more sustainable system, it is critical to reduce the amount of waste generated and properly dispose of food waste in order to maximize the use of all resources. Zero-waste and organics diversion programs are excellent ways to encourage sustainable practices and reduce waste. Every program presents unique challenges and opportunities for new and innovative solutions! Click here to learn more.

“The New Rules of Green Marketing” by Jacquelyn A. Ottman – Book Review

I took the last month to read through The New Rules of Green Marketing by Jacquelyn A. Ottman of J. Ottman Consulting and I thought this read offered wonderful think pieces. Though published in 2011, there are takeaways that can supplement current marketing practices and campaigns to ensure they make the intended impact on consumers. […]

Well, What Are We Supposed to Eat?

The “Omnivore’s Dilemma…” by Michael Pollen Just when I thought I couldn’t learn anything more about the earth, soil, and the food that we consume every day I opened Michael Pollen’s book, “Omnivore’s Dilemma, A Natural History of Four Meals.” The “Omnivore’s Dilemma…” is very insightful into the food industry and just what is sprayed […]

Let’s all Kiss the Ground!

To say ‘Kiss the Ground’ by Josh Tickell changed the way I look at the soil as well as the food I put in my body is an understatement. A revolution happened in my mind as I learned that the herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides (-cides) originated from Germany’s regrettable history (scientists Fritz Haber and Carl […]

Commendable! a review of the book ‘Rubbish!…’ by William Rathje and Cullen Murphy

By: Mercy Oyadare Flipping through the pages of ‘Rubbish! The Archaeology of Garbage’ by William Rathje and Cullen Murphy, I initially didn’t know what to expect. This read was a stark contrast from the strict urban fiction and drama-packed regime I usually follow. However, from this read, I gained a different perspective along with a […]

What I’ve Learned – A Fresh Perspective on the Bioplastics Industry

By: Mercy Oyadare, Natur-Tec® Marketing Coordinator I’ve been working for Natur-Tec®, a division of Northern Technologies International Corporation (NTIC), which is a sector that manufactures compostable and sustainable, biopolymers and bioplastics, for just over two months. I’ve never worked in the bioplastic industry before, so with the help of my supervisor and the Natur-Tec® team, […]

What is the Compost Act? and Why it’s Important!

Green bins and sort stations for separating organics and compostable food service packaging are becoming more common in places such as cafeterias, schools, and office buildings. But what happens after food scraps and organics are separated from recycling and landfill waste streams? After collection, food scraps, compostable food service packaging, and other organic waste is […]

Home Composting vs. Industrial Composting

Anything that was once living can be composted. This includes food waste, organics, and materials that result from the storage, preparation, cooking, handling, selling, or serving of food. As more businesses and consumers focus on sustainability, composting plays an important role in reducing waste and sequestering carbon. When composting is concerned, it is important to […]

Sporting venues and sustainability

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again. The amount of single-use plastic packaging produced every year is mind blowing… 78 million tons annually. That’s 156,000,000,000 pounds, or the weight of about 1.9 million Boeing 747s – still lost in the math, that’s about 14 times the weight of The Great Pyramid of Giza. […]

The Dangers of PFAS Chemicals

PFAS, short for “Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances”.  Maybe you’ve heard of them, maybe not.  Regardless if you’re aware of PFAS chemicals, their applications, and the potential dangers associated with these chemicals, now is the time to take note because odds are you’ve encountered them frequently. PFAS in everyday life So, what are PFAS chemicals?  Per- […]

The Dangers of Oxo-degradable Plastics

The year is 2020.  Technology and knowledge have advanced farther than ever before.  We’ve walked on the moon and pioneered electric vehicles.  Utilized the most advanced technologies available to develop powerful artificial intelligence (AI) and continuously generate tremendous amounts of data in hopes of growing our knowledge of the world further still.  And created […]

Why We All Should Use Less Plastic.

Plastic waste and pollution impacts us all At this point, we’re all aware that plastic pollutants are EVERYWHERE within our environment.  Microplastics have been discovered in most remote regions on Earth. The amount of plastic waste that enters the world’s oceans is astounding.  Each year, millions of tons of plastics enter the oceans, resulting in […]

Zero-Waste During Quarantine…and What’s Next

Zero-Waste During Quarantine…and What’s Next The last few months, for many of us, have been far from normal.  Our routines have changed, and it’s likely we’re all spending more time at home.  But what does that mean for zero-waste?  The COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing “stay at home” orders have dramatically impacted our day-to-day lives and […]

Kiss the Ground…Our Forgotten Relationship with Soil

Kiss the Ground…Our Forgotten Relationship with Soil Dirt…it’s everywhere.  In our gardens, under the grass where our children play, in the fields that grow our food, and even on the bottom of our shoes that we accidently walked through the house with.  But what lies beneath the surface, out of sight and often out of […]

Make Zero-Waste Work For You

You wouldn’t paint your living room with a tooth brush… and it’s just as unlikely that Amazon will begin using Honda Civics to pull 53-foot trailers filled with last minute PRIME orders across the country (they wouldn’t get very far, and lots of people would be pretty upset that their zero-waste kitchen accessories didn’t arrive […]

We have jobs, families, busy schedules, budgets, and other interests…so how can reducing waste fit into our busy lives?  Whether you’re at home, at work, or on the go, there are some […]
